Field Barns in the Yorkshire Dales

Traditional field barns. Photo by Andy Hawkins.

One of the most distinctive features of the dales landscape is the number of traditional field barns seen, especially around Wensleydale, Swaledale, Arkengarthdale and Littondale.

Most of the field barns seen in the North Yorkshire Dales today where built around the 18th and 19th centuries in the hay meadows to provide feed storage and livestock shelters in the event of severe winter weather.

Sadly a large number of these impressive buildings are in a poor state of disrepair and are being allowed to tumble down rather than being repaired. The National Park Authority with help from English Heritage has managed to secure European funding, and using this together with its own resources, has set up a grant aided programme in three of the dales to help restore many of the field barns.
